Jour des Crepes! In France, the holiday of French Chandeleur, or Candlemmas, means there will be lots and lots of crêpes to be eaten according to French Cultural Care au pair Vanessa (pictured below with her homemade crêpes).
- Vanessa says that the round shape and golden color of the crêpe reminds the French of the sun. The crêpes also play a role in a bit of fortune telling! Apparently, when one cooks the crêpes, she holds a coin in her writing hand and the pan in the other, and flips the crêpe into the air. If she manage to catch the crêpe in the pan, her family will be prosperous for the rest of the year.
- The Catholic holiday of Candlemas, on 2 February, is a feast to commemorate the purification of the Virgin Mary and the presentation of baby Jesus.
- For Vanessa’s family, they put a piece of gold or one euro inside the first crêpe they cook. Then, they fold the crêpe in aluminum foil and put it on the top of a kitchen cupboard for prosperity. The crêpe is supposed to never expire. Also, all candles in the house should be lit.
French Crêpes Recipe:
Ingredients (about 12 crêpes)
1 cup all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon white sugar
1/4 teaspoon salt
2 cups milk
2 tablespoons butter, melted
- Sift together flour and salt; set aside. In a large bowl, beat eggs and milk together with an electric mixer. Beat in flour mixture until smooth; stir in melted butter.
- Heat a lightly oiled griddle or frying pan over medium high heat. Pour or scoop the batter onto the griddle, using approximately 2 tablespoons for each crepe. Tip and rotate pan to spread batter as thinly as possible. Brown on both sides and serve hot.
- Once cooked, you can add sugar, Nutella, peanut butter, fruit, whipped cream or even eat savory crêpes as a main dish vegetables, meat, and cheese!
